My 2023 Bass Practice

This is the place where I'm posting my bass practice for 2023

will post a video once a fortnight to show my practice. This is to help me stay focused. I posted very 2 weeks when I was on my Cohort Days and I want to continue this.  If you want to comment, please do so on the video on YouTube.

You can subscribe to my YouTube channel or wait until I post my new video here.
And yes, I created a Facebook page too.  This is about my thoughts on practice, on what I experience at live shows, my musings on music etc.

My favorite things

This is a song written for the Sound of Music.. it turned in a song for Christmas song. This is my very first time putting myself into the video with myself. One playing one part while the other 'me' playing the first part.

Smoothly - A minute and a half song

When I first started learning the bass, like the first week, I joined SBL and did this song. It was a challenge, and I wish I would have recorded myself.

I decided to revisit some of the song levels that I did and I was really proud that
1) not only did I play a lot better and with more confidence. but
2) I understood the theory behind the whole song. That is thanks to my Cohort days with Ariane Cap, but also my persistence :)                                                    December 23, 2023

Triads all over the Fretboard

I'm doing the Pattern System with Ariane Cap on her online course, and this is part of the homework. I am, however, doing a bit more than asked. Took me hours.
I was playing Root, 2, 3, 5, then going to the next note in the Descending Fifths.

G major triads

This is a 3 part short practice video of saying and playing the triads starting on different positions
1 (Root)-3-5,
3-1-5,
3-5-1

Does the metronome help with Brain speed

There is a challenge at Scott's Bass Lessons called "the bassless challenge".  So I experimented using my mind to think of the notes in thirds of the D major scale. If you look in the comments, I have links to videos that go with this challenge.

While doing the challenge, I realised something that happened, and this was about the metronome.

If you watch the video, I comment through out, and you can read my thoughts at the end of the video

The changed that helped my sixteeNths

Sometimes it is the review of watching yourself that a lightbulb moment lights up. I knew about how I needed to change my right hand/fingers playing, but didn't understand why until I tried playing 16th notes

Mamacita inspired bass practice

Mamacita is a bit of Jazz, RnB, Blues, Bossa.  Joe Henderson's tune of Mamacita was recorded in one take which is why some of the song is swing, and other times it's not. Horn players have a hard time with some of their rhythm.

My video is about practicing the off beat- my journey- and a first attempt of playing this tune using iReal Pro.
Listen to the original tune and you'll get it.

the A major scale- inside & out

There are 6 ways that I practiced, and I'm showing short snippets of my practice.
I was inspired to learn this scale as I'm learning to read music and one of the scores is from an inspiration from The Beatles.

Sade- Smooth Operator

Part of the challenge for this song is that the bass is an integral  part of this beautiful song. The practice is cut up in bits- intro, chorus, pre-chorus, bass solo. I used Moises.ai to take the bass part out of the song.

Stuck in the Middle
With You

Explanation of the theory behind the song (Thanks Ariane Cap for your explanation) This song is in the key of D (D, Em, F#m, G, A, Bm, C#dim)

June 2023

Part 2 of Stuck/Middle

Learn your pentatonic scale with this song!

Penta meaning 5 notes except the interval 4 & 7) The song ticks over quite nicely UNTIL you get to bottom of the verse and it changes.... there's a modal interchange which is A C G D7. -- NOT C#

Don't you love it?!?

Part 3 of Stuck/Middle

I'm using the pattern from Stuck in the Middle with You and grooving it on it.

It took all day to figure out how to jam on the groove as I was using extra notes!

Hey, nothing else to do during the day then to figure out basslines!

Ooops!

What happens when you take a picture of yourself instead of a video.

My practice is up on my Groove Challenge page. I'm doing 10 short grooves and recording how I practiced.

I'll will focus on songs next....during my overseas trip!

Stand by Me

This is a great song to learn as it has a simple groove and it repeats itself. You can learn the A major scale and it's intervals and find them in all part of the neck-- which I demonstrate on the video.

The Up beat- how hard can it be?

Using the song Memphis Underground, we dive deep into the rhythm, and use the material for learning and practicing different rhythms. The upbeat is one of them. It looks simple enough, but...  another brain gym to keep you young!

(part 2 of the video on the left will be here)

The first part of Memphis Underground has a great bass groove that is a good way of practicing 'other stuff'

Okay- you just get a photo of me instead.  there isn't a Part 2 yet!

Song for my father, Rhythm and 'the boy'

I concentrated on Song For My Father · Horace Silver. Listen to the beginning of the song to get what I'm practicing .

First thing that I learnt from Ariane Cap was that my timing for the whole bossa was off. I show you what I learned.

Next, I learned the melody on the bass.. pull off, and hammer ons... yipee!  This was part of my finger exercise for the week!

Can I keep the beat with a rhythm WITH MY FOOT that is off beat.

I am also practiced some grooves with Dan Hawkins. I've got 20 of them so... one at a time, thank you very much!

Of course, the last bit in 'the boy' riff... guess what song it might be from.

Rhythm, Wizard and Leaves

These are snippets of bass practice that I've done over 2 weeks. Pinball Wizard, the jazz tune Autumn Leaves and learning a short rhythm (oh, my head hurts- a day later! )

This practice video was supposed to be me playing Pinball Wizard, the song, but... well, you are getting snippets of my practice instead. The part that I'm playing for the song is actually not how I really play it (which makes me wonder why I included it...)

I thought that I'd share -- especially the Rhythm practice that I got mixed up in. That's what happens when you start watching teaching lessons that grip you and test you and you think to yourself " how hard can that be"   Ouch!  I went down a rabbit hole.

Folding the Circle of Fifths

I explain at the beginning of the video how I learned how to fold the Circle of Fifth to make a scale. Then practicing A major scale in its form, down 4th, using part of Dizzy Gillspie's song as a little two bar rhythm, and starting to learn Autumn Leaves without the page!

The Wanton Song - Zeppelin

Using part of this song to practice riffs, fingering, permutations, circle of fourths/descending fourths. I explain what I do at the beginning of the video

March 2 2023

Good Times, Bad Times

Using a riff of a song to practice finger exercises, your knowledge of the descending fourths, the ability of thinking fast, using this exercise to help understand and/or remember the minor scales.

I'm not finished with this exercise, this is just the beginning!

What the F ?!?

This week I continued with my Blues Practice, but this video is concentrating on my F Major Practice.

In this video I start with explaining what I learned about how to use the Circle of Fifth , or as Ariane Cap says, the descending fourths. A few brainwaves happened.

Today, I watch a band live on stage, and I watched the bass player, and I saw the frets she was using on the G and D string and knew the song was in F major !! Yahoo for me!

Blues COurse- 4 week -started Jan 16, 2023

It's weird how life brings you full circle. Read on...

I'm taking a Blues Course with the Aussie Luke from Becoming a Bassist.

For our homework, we have to pick a blues band and listen to one of their albums -- really listen to it, and describe the groove, the bass language, etc.

I get emails from A Blues Magazine, and one band caught my eye. The Ghost Town Blues Band.

I go on Spotify and start listening... and they are good. I learn that their new album “Shine” hits #1 on Billboards Blues Charts, #26 Billboard Rock Charts, and so on...

BUT, GUESS what?!

I check their website, and check out where they are playing in 2023-- and they are on tour. But guess where they'll be where I'll be in July 2023... Ottawa! (UPDATE: They played on the weekend that I wasn't in Ottawa. I was seeing family in Quebec City.)

How coincidental is THAT?

Blues Practice

This is my second week on this course (only last 4), and I've been trying to ram 'lots in.
The first module went over the 12 bar blues form, learning the language -- how to play (Roots, 3rd 5th), or the Basic Boogie, Rock & Roll Boogie, Blues Rock Box, Falling Box, Willie Dixon Box... and at the end, play like it is a simulated jam session. Basically, knowing the key, and that's about it.

In this video, there's a bit of everything. I've put how long the mini-videos are, what I'm playing (at least as much as I remember)

A lot of learning, and heaps of 'repeat, repeat' and it's getting in my body.
February 2, 2023

Permutations 1423 and 2314

These permutations exercises are, in my opinion, really important. They help build strenth for  hammer ons & pulls off.
It doesn't just exercise the fingers, but also makes you aware of the fretboard. I can hear what comes next... getting the ear training at the same time. 1:20 minute video

Speech !! Speech...

~~ My speech to my Toastmaster's club was the 'launch' of my website. ~~
I talked about 'having a life plan' vs 'letting the stars guide you'
I explained how I never had a plan but I decided that my bass practice, learning, music learning finally needs a "management plan".
How better place to commit my practice to the WWW. A place for me to see my progress but for others to be inspired.

Thoughts on March 15, 2023

I wrote an essay for my Uni paper and the theme was "reflections of your musical journey". I wrote it, submitted it, but I'm not quite satisfied with it. I feel that I missed out a lot of reflection in the the way piano was taught to me and how this type of teaching influenced my life, or my musical life...... however, this may be a big load for my piano teacher to carry. Probably not totally her fault.

I'm talking about control, about letting go, and the influence of this IN my music making. Piano was taught in a linear way, without any playful playing... making noise and seeing what sounds good.

I was on my Cohort Journey 2 years ago where, for 40 weeks, I followed videos regarding music theory, played the theory then there was a bit of 'improv' or using part of a song to learn theory.

I look back on learning bass ( I'm only in my third year) and for the past 2 years I have shied away from improvising, of letting loose, or play how I feel. But on the other hand, I knew that it wasn't just about 'letting go', but it was organised chaos. Even with Ari's Groove & Fill drill, I always felt that I didn't get it. Now, I wonder.... is this the left over of formal, classical piano teaching from years ago? I'm not the only person having a hard time 'improvising' and I wonder how the formal 'do as I say' piano teaching has influenced a generation of piano students. (or any other music student)

On the flip side, there was a moment during class yesterday where the Ari explained the concept in another way where I went 'ohhhh' and my brain synapses went nuts! . But you know that this wouldn't have happened without hearing the same sort of explanations in different ways, in different contexts, and in a different stage of understanding music theory. I now feel that I'm on the cusp of getting it, and understanding WHY I'm getting it.  How exciting...

I am trying to jam 40 or so years of music playing in 4 years. I believe that if I keep asking questions, writing it out, and figuring out things for myself, committing and submitting videos (ie pushing myself), I will have fulfilled a big part of my life-- and that is, being pushed into the group because 'you're good enough' to jam with them. What I mean precisely is that I hear something a musician plays, and I respond with what I hear and it sounds awesome-- you step away and feel elated and want more of the same. That is what improv is for me.

Going to Africa also features in my life's ambition. This last sentence comes from the fact that I'm taking African Drumming :) ... and that's another topic.
